Vajrasattva Retreat and Tashi Choling Spotlight

Tashi Choling temple in Ashland, Oregon

On May 23rd, 2024 the Vajrasattva retreat concluded at Tashi Choling, our sister center in Southern Oregon. The annual, 10-day event was organized by many sangha members from Tashi Choling and other centers of Venerable Gyatrul Rinpoche.

In 1997, the first Vajrasattva retreat was held at the request of Gyatrul Rinpoche to offer participants an opportunity to practice Dharma and purify negativities.

With very few exceptions, the annual retreat continues today with the support of visiting lamas and senior sangha members sharing their knowledge with new members.

Brief History of Tashi Choling

In the late 1970's Venerable Gyatrul Rinpoche continued to establish Dharma centers on the west coast with the addition of Tashi Choling, a country retreat in the Colestin Valley.

The land was purchased in 1979 and it was then blessed by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche in 1980.

Over the decades much work was done: adding a 35-foot high Vajrasattva statue, a temple and residence, an east wing, and statues of Guru Rinpoche, Vimalamitra, and Amitabha.

Pictured is the construction of the temple during the 1980's (Picture from Dharma Treasure in the Mountain Valley)

The center was often the home for Venerable Gyatrul Rinpoche, and hosted great masters including His Holiness Penor Rinpoche, His Holiness Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche, Venerable Yangthang Tulku Rinpoche, Venerable Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, and many others.

The wisdom of these teachers continues to benefit others, including through the kindness and dedication of Venerable Gyatrul's students, who model the practices and how to be a practitioner.

One of these examples is the live streaming of Tashi Choling's monthly practices that Dorje Ling broadcasts at its center (see Upcoming Events for this month's schedule).

To learn more about Tashi Choling, check out the its history in the book, Dharma Treasure in the Mountain Valley.

New Book for Study Group

Tuesday June 25th, 7:00-8:30 (Google Meet)

The Book Study group will start a new book on June 25th and all are welcome to join. Each weekly session is facilitated by a senior student, and participants break up into smaller groups for part of each evening, to connect and delve deeper into the week's reading.

"In this masterful translation and commentary on Tokmé Zongpo's Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva, Ken McLeod shines the light of wisdom on the challenges of contemporary life and illuminates a path the modern reader can take to freedom, peace and understanding. Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva is one of the most revered and loved texts in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. In just thirty-seven verses, Tokmé Zongpo summarizes the bodhisattva path as it was taught and practiced in this tradition."

"'May all beings be freed from their suffering of feeling so separate from their buddhanature.' With that as your compassionate intention, then if you offer one butter lamp or one flower or one cookie at tsog, then how extraordinary is that offering."
